single serving apple fritter: johnny doughnuts got me again!

**Johnny’s is on the move apparently as they close up their Hayes Valley location for new digs

I think I've mentioned before how much a fan I am of apple fritters. It's has all those things which hit my sweet spots--deep fried donut dough with cinnamon, sugar and apples as a bonus. And yes, I'm quite well aware how very, very bad they are for one's diet. It's not like I'm having one every day you know! Normally when I start to crave one of these I head down to my local Happy Donut to get one, though it can  be hit or miss when you go. Sometimes they don't have any, or they are over cooked or undercooked or any number of other things.

I've also been a fan of Johnny Doughnuts too. Here in SF we only have their food truck around town randomly, thus my opportunities to try them aren't often. Recently, a friend mentioned they were heading up to Richmond for something or other and said they go by Johnny's brick and mortar location and would I like anything. Duh! Of course I would! I asked to get a few of my favorites I've had before and then I asked for a splurge and decided to finally try their version of an apple fritter.

Now, I'd seen it before but it just looked so big and heavy, I felt it better to try an array of their other offerings instead. But now here it was, in my hot little hands.

It is big and hefty for sure. As you can see, it is not the standard shape. It is more of a large blob of sugar covered dough. One of the biggest differences between Johnny's and others is the apples. Most others chopped the apples into little tiny square pieces. This one has large slabs of apple you can actually taste when eating it as opposed to an essence of apple bits. Plus you get a real punch of cinnamon and together it is like a delicious super chunky applesauce surrounded by thick, dense bready pieces of deep fried dough. Even with the denseness, it was cooked all the way through, nothing doughy going on here. With one bite I was like, "why have I waited to try this!" It is my new favorite apple fritter.

That's right, I said it. It is sweet, apple-y, cinnamon-y, doughnut-y, taste-y. Which is probably why it is a good thing Johnny doesn't have a regular location here in town as I would be making up excuses to go by there all the time to "get some for other folks" and while I'm there, sure, why not an apple fritter for myself! Flawed reasoning by any standards, but a sweet tooth has no rationalization.

For the hardcore dessert person, Johnny Doughnuts apple fritter is a treat. A big, sweet, deep fried doughnut dough one with large chunks of apple. It was definitely worth trying. Some folks may feel the need to cut this up and share as it may be a bit much. To those I say, dessert lightweights! But at least you tried it! The rest of us gluttons will just relish it's delicious as we slide our way into a sugar nap. Yeah, again, probably good they don't have a permanent spot in town.
