It's no secret I've been to the SOMA StrEat Food Park any number of times and on almost every occasion I see one or two trucks that I've seen there or at other events and think, eh, nothing special, because I'm looking to really invigorate my taste buds. One such truck I've seen a lot and avoided has been Gyros On Wheels--not because I think it's bad or anything it's just, you know, gyros--that's something I can pretty much get anywhere in this town, so not exciting. Yet, on this particular Sunday, I thought, WTF, I'd pretty much tried all the other trucks there that day so why not them.
Yeah, I know, doesn't seem like a whole hearted effort on my part but I dove in and since this is gyros I went with the traditional gyro meat, but I wasn't feeling all the bread today so I asked for the salad version of it, which incidentally comes with some pita bread anyway.
And to be straight up honest, for $8 it won't bad. It's a pretty generous portion of traditional gyro beef (lamb, veal and spices) warmed up on a grill then served over a bed of romaine lettuce with tomatoes, carrots, purple onions and cucumbers covered in a drizzle of tzatziki sauce--that pungent yogurt mint sauce that brings gyros all together. All together it was exactly as advertised, though I was a little confused by the lemon as I've not had one of those offered whenever I get the sandwich somewhere, thus I kind of skipped it. Otherwise it was fresh, hot, filling and tasty enough to leave me happy with my choice. Tender, peppery meat, fresh veggies--it's what gyros are all about. The pita slices were grilled in olive oil which gave them a nice flavor and crispness so I'll say that was an added bonus.
Sometimes when you are out of choices and tired of thinking too hard, little surprises can pop up to make things not seem quite so dour. While I'm not going to say this was like the best food truck food ever, I will say it was pretty good. And if you only choice is them, don't fret too much as it is a pretty tasty choice. So nice job Gyros On Wheels, you exceeded my expectations in providing a meaty semi-healthy food truck choice with some good flavors. Anyone who likes gyros will certainly enjoy what you are serving up.
