I think I've made no bones about the fact I truly bemoan the cost of sandwiches in this town. Particularly when all you are getting is just a sandwich, no sides, no chips, no nothing. Plus they aren't any bigger than they've been before either. Supposedly you are paying for quality, handmade, local, organic ingredients specially prepared for your lunchtime enjoyment or whatever. So when a few folks mention I should try the breakfast sandwich at Little Skillet while I'm on my morning meal adventure, I balk at first after seeing on their website it is $9! Plus tax!
Now I've been to Little Skillet before and can say I quite enjoy their chicken and or waffle combo things and sometimes their pork po'boy, but this seemed a little extreme. After ruminating on this for a week or so, I decided to suck it up and shell out the bucks to give it a try.
Basically you get your choice of either their biscuit or an open faced waffle sandwich with egg any style, cheese and also a choice of bacon, sausage, fried chicken or vegetable (presumably of the day since you know I won't about to try that version). I opted for the biscuit with a hard fried egg and surprise....fried chicken!

The biscuit is somewhere between the standard bready kind and those flaky things you get out of a can. Not a particularly bad thing though. It's not overly doughy or crumbly and holds together quite well while you are eating it. This thing is also big, like baby's head big. And loaded with meat and egg. It was big enough I needed to cut it in half to eat and enjoy. Chicken is juicy and plentiful, not terribly crispy but still flavorful. The egg is cooked to order so it's fresh and hot. Eating it almost doesn't feel like breakfast. It's more like chicken on a bun that just happens to have an egg too. Somehow it all works together, mostly.
There is no actual sauce or mayo or such on here thus it can come off just a little dry with so much bread and chicken. I won't say this is so much a drawback as an opportunity. I think we all know my suggestion here is to request a side of butter with this to spread on the biscuit. It will add some greasy moistness to it and make it even better. The other option is to get your egg over easy, then you'll have some gooey yolk to ease it down. So yes, I did like this a lot. But what about that price?
Well, one thing the menu didn't mention that came as a surprise to me was this came with a side.

When I got my order there was this bowl of fresh cut fruit with it. A pleasant addition to the sandwich. A chunky mix of kiwi, orange, pineapple and red grapes. They weren't overly ripe or sweet and had just the right among of bright tang to compliment the big heavy biscuit. Very nice.
That means you get a pretty big biscuit loaded with meat and egg and nice sized bowl of fruit for about $10. What initially seemed like a real budget stretch suddenly turns into a decent and tasty deal for the cheapskate in me. Believe me, I'm as shocked as you are. I found something I liked and (mostly) didn't mind the cost for it. Think they refer to that as a small miracle. It's not something I could get everyday, but definitely worth a splurge once.
