GOAT HILL PIZZA IN SOMA....WAIT, THEY'RE OPEN AGAIN?!
I think I've mentioned before finding a decent, affordable lunch in SOMA can be challenging. Yes, there are a lot more options these days due to all the tech offices and what not. Problem is, sometimes they cater to them with a devil may care attitude in their pricing. For those of us who live in the hood it can be disappointing. One place I had found was an off shoot of Goat Hill Pizza, who's original place in Potrero Hill is still chugging along nicely. Then they added a location in West Portal and for awhile the walk up window place in SOMA seemed to disappear. But now it is back and the signs to grab a slice can be found at either end of Stillman street. A little strip of road that runs just below the 101. Since they are back, let's eat some pizza!
It may not seem like the best of places to get a bite, but in large part it actually is. It's just a tiny walk up window and the area is noisy with traffic, thus I highly recommend taking back to your desk, home or even the few blocks walk over to South Park. They do offer their standard list of pizzas like at the restaurant and they also feature a pizza/slice of the day. Me, I wanted to just create my own, which they also offer since each one is made to order and not from a pre-made pie that has been sitting around all day. You can get a 2 topping slice for $3.50, so I got 2 slices, duh!
This is what I got. I was shocked, it was the size of a small pizza. I knew their slices were big, just not this much. That is not a complaint, that is a small moment of joy in finding a hearty lunch time meal for $7 that also will yield some leftovers. (And really, is there anything better than leftover pizza? --answer is no) One side is sausage and mushroom the other is pepperoni and spinach, because I felt I needed some green vegetable thingy.
Goat hill makes their own sourdough pizza dough and also their sauces. The slices have that great thin crust crunch and only have minor soggy tip syndrome. You get the great flavor of sourdough and this is one pizza where I will actually eat the crust. Though usually I put a little butter on it like it was a roll or something. You probably didn't need to know that, but there it is. As you can see you get a ample supply of toppings allowing for a little bit of each in every bite. There is also enough cheese for the cheesy lover in you. The sauce has a nice spicy, sweet kick to it and they don't over sauce it either, which is nice. From first bite to finishing crust, it is a really tasty slice. Slice and a half? 2 big slices? 4 small slices? Well, no matter how you slice it, they are serving up one of the better pizzas in the city.
One thing to keep in mind if you are ordering a choose your own topping slice, it does roughly 10-15 minutes for them pull it together from scratch to piping hot slice. If you have that long a lunch break then kudos to you. For everyone else, I'd recommend calling in an order ahead so it is ready when you get there.
I'm glad this place is open again as they also do delivery in the SOMA hood. Goat Hill has been churning out pizza since 1975 and before you usually had to go to their original location to get their delicious pies. Now they are a bit easier to get to and I'd highly suggest you give them a try. On your lunch hour, dinner hour, whatever hour you have to spare for pizza. Surely you can spare an hour for pizza, I mean, it's pizza people!
